Definition of Cleft Sentence
যে Sentence-এ কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান, সময় বা অন্য কোনো অংশকে বিশেষ গুরুত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য একটি সাধারণ বাক্যকে দুইটি Clause-এ ভাগ করা হয়, তাকে Cleft Sentence বলে।
Structure of Cleft Sentence
Cleft Sentence এর সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত গঠন হলো—
It + be verb + গুরুত্বপ্রাপ্ত অংশ + who/that + বাক্যের বাকি অংশ
উদাহরণ -
Simple Sentence: Rahul won the prize.
Cleft Sentence: It was Rahul who won the prize.
এখানে Rahul-এর উপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে।
আরও উদাহরণ -
It is English that she wants to learn.
It was yesterday that we met.
It was in Kolkata that my uncle lives.
Rules of Cleft Sentence
Cleft Sentence গঠন করার সময় নিচের নিয়মগুলো মনে রাখতে হবে—
1. Cleft Sentence-এ who বা that-এর পরে যে Verb বসে, সেটি মূল Subject অনুযায়ী হবে, It অনুযায়ী নয়।
উদাহরণ -
It is I who am a doctor.
It is he who is my friend.
It is they who are playing.
It was Rina who bought a new phone.
2. ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত who ব্যবহার করা হয়।
উদাহরণ -
It was Rahul who helped me.
3. বস্তু, স্থান, সময় ইত্যাদির ক্ষেত্রে সাধারণত that ব্যবহার করা হয়।
উদাহরণ -
It was the book that I wanted.
It was yesterday that we met.
It was at school that I first saw him.
4. Be verb-এর কাল (is/was/will be) মূল বাক্যের কাল অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়।
উদাহরণ -
Present: It is Riya who teaches us.
Past: It was Riya who taught us.
Future: It will be Riya who will lead the team.
Types of Cleft Sentence
Cleft Sentence প্রধানত দুই ধরনের।
1. It-cleft Sentence :-
এই ধরনের Cleft Sentence It + be verb দিয়ে শুরু হয়। বাক্যের কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান, সময় বা অন্য কোনো অংশকে বিশেষ গুরুত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য এই গঠন ব্যবহার করা হয়।
উদাহরণ -
It was Rahul who won the prize.
It is English that she wants to learn.
It was yesterday that we met.
2. Wh-cleft Sentence :-
এই ধরনের Cleft Sentence What, Where, When, Why, How ইত্যাদি Wh-word দিয়ে শুরু হয়। একে Pseudo-cleft Sentence-ও বলা হয়।
উদাহরণ -
What I need is a holiday.
What she wants is a new laptop.
What we need is more practice.
