Punctuation Marks

We occasionally pause to speak or write in order to make the thoughts of the mind comprehensible.  We use some symbols in these pauses.  The use of these symbols in writing is called Punctuation and these symbols are called Punctuation Marks.

(মনের ভাবকে বোধগম্য করে তোলার জন্য আমরা কথা বলা বা লেখার সময় মাঝে মাঝে থামি । এই বিরাম স্থানগুলিতে আমরা কিছু চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করে থাকি । লেখার মধ্যে এই চিহ্ন গুলির ব্যবহার কে Punctuation বলা হয় এবং এই চিহ্ন গুলিকে Punctuation Marks বলা হয় ।)

Importance of Punctuation Marks :-

People cannot utter a single sentence all at once.  These punctuation marks specify how much can be pronounced together according to the meaning of a particular part of the sentence and where to stop.  The use of punctuation marks is essential in the interest of the reader's pause and to make the full meaning of the sentence understandable.

(কোন একটি Sentence কে মানুষ পুরোটা একসঙ্গে উচ্চারণ করতে পারে না । বাক্যের নির্দিষ্ট অংশের অর্থ অনুসারে কতটুকু একসঙ্গে উচ্চারণ করা যায় এবং কোথায় থামতে হয় সেটা নির্দিষ্ট করে দেয় এই বিরাম চিহ্ন গুলি । পাঠকের বিরতির স্বার্থে এবং বাক্যের সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ বোধগম্য করে তোলার লক্ষ্যে বিরাম বা যতিচিহ্নের ব্যবহার অত্যন্ত প্রয়োজনীয় ।)

What are the 14 Punctuation Marks in English :-

The use of 14 punctuation marks is especially noticeable.

(১৪ টি যতি চিহ্নের ব্যবহার বিশেষভাবে লক্ষ্য করা যায় ।) E.g -

1. Comma [ , ]

2. Full stop or period [ . ]

3. Colon [ : ]

4. Semicolon [ ; ]

5. Question or Interrogation mark [ ? ]

6. Exclamation mark [ ! ]

7. Apostrophe [ ' ]

8. Quotation mark or Inverted commas [ “ ” ]

9. Dash [ _ ]

10. Hyphen [ - ]

Uses of Punctuation Mark :-

Uses of Comma -

a. If you want to pause for a short time while reading a sentence, you have to use this symbol.

(কোনো Sentence পড়ার সময় খুব অল্প সময় থামতে হলে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করতে হয় ।)

Ex - If she comes, I will go .

b. Comma is used after introductory 'Yes' or 'No' .

(Introductory 'Yes' অথবা 'No' এর পরে Comma বসে ।)

Ex - Yes, This book is mine .

c. Comma is used after place, time and date .

(স্থান, কাল এবং তারিখ এর পরে Comma বসে ।)

Ex - He lives in Purulia, West Bengal .

d. Comma sits before any utterance.

(কোন উক্তির পূর্বে Comma বসে ।)

Ex - He said, " I am ill ."

e. Comma sits before and after Noun is Apposition.

(Noun is Apposition এর আগে ও পরে Comma বসে ।)

Ex - Saratbabu, a teacher, was a well-read .

Uses of Full stop or period -

Full stop is known as period in American English .

(American English এ Full stop কে Period বলা হয় ।)

a. Full stop sits at the end of all types of sentences except interrogative and exclamatory sentences.

(Interrogative এবং Exclamatory বাক্য ছাড়া বাকি সমস্ত ধরনের বাক্যের শেষে Full stop বসে ।)

Ex - Today is holiday . ( Assertive Sentence )

b. Full stop is used at the time of of Abbreviation .

(Abbreviation ( সংক্ষিপ্তকরণ ) এর সময় Full stop ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - B.A, B.Sc, M.A, Mr., Mrs. a.m, p.m etc .

Uses of Colon -

a. Colon is used after the word or sentence to explain a word or sentence.

(কোন শব্দ বা বাক্যের ব্যাখ্যার জন্য সেই শব্দ বা বাক্যের পর Colon ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - Curious : eager to know .

b. Colon is used to quote someone.

(কারো উদ্ধৃতি দিতে Colon ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - Vivekananda said : Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man .

Uses of Semicolon -

a. When the Co-ordinating Clause between two statements is not joined by a Conjunction, that is, Semicolon is used to pause a little longer than the Comma.

(দুটি বক্তব্যের মধ্যে Co-ordinating Clause যখন কোনো Conjunction  দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় না, অর্থাৎ Comma -র চেয়ে একটু বেশি সময় থামতে Semicolon ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - Man proposes; God disposes .

Uses of Question mark -

a. This symbol is used at the end of questionable sentences .

(প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যের শেষে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - What is your name ?

b. If there is any doubt in any word or sentence, this mark is placed at the end of it.

(কোনো Word বা Sentence এ সংশয় থাকলে তার শেষে এই চিহ্ন বসে ।)

Ex - Mr. Singh is an Bengali ?

Uses of Exclamation mark -

a. This symbol is used in indicative sentences like surprise, joy, happiness, sorrow, emotion etc.

(বিস্ময়, আনন্দ, সুখ, দুঃখ, আবেগ ইত্যাদি সূচক বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - Hurrah ! We have won the match .

b. This symbol is used to address someone .

(সম্বোধনের শেষে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - Dear Rabi ! You are so intelligent .

Uses of Apostrophe -

a. Used in Possessive Case of a Noun.

(কোনো Noun এর Possessive Case এ ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - This is Rita's bag .

b. To create a contracted form of a word, you have to remove the letter at the end of the verb and put Apostrophe in its place.

(কোনো Word এর contracted form তৈরি করতে verb এর শেষে কোন অক্ষর কে বাদ দিয়ে তার জায়গায় Apostrophe বসাতে হয় ।)

Ex - do not = don't, would not = won't etc .

Uses of Quotation mark -

a. Quotation mark is used at the beginning and end of any statement.

(কোন উক্তির প্রথমে ও শেষে Quotation mark ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - The teacher said, " Don't run in the sun ."

b. Single or double inverted comma is used to denote the name of a particular story, poem, novel, book, magazine etc.

(কোন বিশেষ গল্প, কবিতা, উপন্যাস, বই, পত্রিকা প্রভৃতির নাম বোঝাতে single বা double inverted comma ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - Rabindranath wrote 'Gitanjali' .

Uses of Dash -

a. If you want to summarize many subjects together, you have to use Dash before and after it.

(অনেক Subject কে একসঙ্গে সংক্ষিপ্ত করে প্রকাশ করতে হলে তার আগে ও পরে Dash ব্যবহার করতে হয় ।)

Ex - Friends, relatives and companions _ all were present .

Uses of Hyphen -

a. Hyphen is used to create Compound word .

(Compound word তৈরি করতে ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, passer-by, step-by-step etc .

b. Dash is used to write the numbers from 21 to 99 in words.

(২১ থেকে ৯৯ পর্যন্ত সংখ্যাগুলিকে কথায় লিখতে Dash ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - twenty-one, thirty-two, fifty-five, ninety-nine etc .

Uses of Ellipsis -

a. This symbol is used to remove irrelevant parts from any text.

(কোন লেখার মধ্য থেকে অপ্রাসঙ্গিক অংশ বাদ দিতে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - Proserpine Seized her girdle and threw it far in the river ... Finally Ceres traced her daughter .

Uses of Asterisk -

a. Asterisk or Star Mark is used to denote space.

(শূন্যস্থান বোঝাতে Asterisk বা Star Mark ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - 

What are the missing letters in the world ?

b. This symbol is used to draw attention to something.

(কোন কিছুর প্রতি দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - * School will remain closed for the next two days .

c. One or more star symbols are used to indicate the importance of necessity.

(প্রয়োজনীয়তার গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে এক বা একাধিক তারকা চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Uses of Parenthesis -

a. This symbol is used to denote the part which is not part of the sentence but without which the meaning remains incomplete .

(যে অংশটি বাক্যের অংশ নয় অথচ যেটা না থাকলে অর্থ অসমাপ্ত থাকে তাকে বোঝাতে এই চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয় ।)

Ex - I know that his brother ( Suman ) is a doctor .

Use of Capital Mark -

a. Used at the beginning of the sentence.

( Sentence এর শুরুতে ব্যবহৃত হয় । )

Ex - It is a picture .

b. Used for day, month and season names.

( দিন, মাস ও ঋতু নামের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয় । )

Ex - Summer, Winter etc .

c. The first letter of proper noun and proper adjective is capital letter.

( Proper noun ও proper adjective এর প্রথম অক্ষর capital letter হয় । )

Ex - Tajmahal, The Chennai Express etc .

d. The first letter of the first word of the first line of the poem is capitalized.

(কবিতার প্রথম লাইন এর প্রথম শব্দটির প্রথম অক্ষর বড় হাতের হয় ।)

Ex - Twinkle, Twinkle, little star .

e. If something is quoted in a sentence, its first letter is capital letter.

(বাক্যের মধ্যে কোনোকিছু উদ্ধৃত করা হলে তার প্রথম অক্ষরটি capital letter হয় ।)

Ex - The teacher said, " Do not run in the sun ."

f. The first letter of a person's surname is capital letter.

(ব্যক্তির পদবীর প্রথম অক্ষর capital letter হয় ।)
Ex - Kabita Lohar is a brilliant teacher .

Uses of Brace -

a. Brace is used to create mathematical equations and similar lists.

(গণিতের সমীকরণ এবং একই ধরনের তালিকা তৈরি করতে Brace ব্যবহৃত হয় ।)

Ex - { 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 }

In conclusion, the use of punctuation marks is very important in the field of education and in various writings of our daily life.

( পরিশেষে বলা যায় যে, শিক্ষার ক্ষেত্রে এবং আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের বিভিন্ন লেখায় যতি চিহ্নের ব্যবহার খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ । )
